Lucía Aleñar Iglesias’s Forastera follows Cata after the sudden death of her grandmother during a summer stay in Mallorca. As she grieves alongside her grandfather, Cata begins to imitate and inhabit aspects of the older woman’s identity, blurring family roles and the line between coping, memory and performance. The beach house gradually takes on a dreamlike, almost ghostly quality as the film explores bereavement through a delicate mixture of realism and spiritual unease.
